Droid Depot: Build Your Own Droid

Tucked inside Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney's Hollywood Studios, Droid Depot is exactly what it sounds like - a workshop stocked with parts, chips, tools and tech where you can build your very own astromech droid from scratch. It's one of the most hands-on experiences in the park, and whether you're a lifelong Star Wars fan or a first-time visitor, watching your droid come to life at the end of it is genuinely hard to beat.

Choosing Your Droid

The first decision you'll make at Droid Depot is which type of droid you want to build. There are two options:

R-Series

The classic astromech unit, made famous by R2-D2. Originally designed to assist with the controls and repairs of starfighters, R-Series units proved adaptable enough to be useful in almost any situation. To build one, you'll need four parts - a dome, body, centre leg and set of side-legs.

BB-Series

Built for increased mobility outside of the starfighter, BB-Series droids like BB-8 feature a spherical body and swivel dome. They also require four parts to construct - a dome, dome connection plate, body sphere and motivator.

Once you've registered your choice with a cast member, you'll be handed a basket and blueprint and sent on your way.

The Building Process

Parts Station

The first stop is the conveyor belt - a moving line of coloured components where you'll pick out the parts for your droid. Parts come around randomly, so you may find yourself waiting a moment to grab exactly what you want. It's all part of the experience.

For both series, available colours include red, blue, purple, orange, white and black - and you can mix and match however you like. R-Series domes also come in a transparent option, with additional colours like pink, green and yellow available through purchasable decals and accessory panels.

Build Station

Once you've collected your parts, you'll head to a dedicated build station where a cast member will walk you through assembly. Simple placemat instructions and on-screen displays guide you through putting everything together in the right sequence - and if you get stuck, help is always on hand. The tools provided, including an electric screwdriver, make the process straightforward enough for all ages.

At your station you'll also find a tray of accent pieces to add the finishing touches to your droid.

Activation

The final step is bringing your droid to life. Once assembled, your droid is primed, paired with a Bluetooth controller and activated - and with a boop and a bleep, it's ready to roll. Both R-Series and BB-Series droids stand around 18 inches tall.

Accessories and Add-Ons

Once your droid is built, there's plenty of room to customise further. Optional extras include:

  • Personality chips: change the sounds your droid makes and how it reacts to different situations (you can preview these before buying)

  • Coloured decals:

  • Coloured accessory panels:

  • Tool attachments:

  • Blaster and jet attachments with light and sound effects

  • Serving tray with tiny plastic cups

Note that optional attachments are currently only available for R-Series droids.

As you explore Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge with your new companion, your droid will react to the sights and sounds around it - making it the perfect travel companion for the rest of your visit.
